Our non-profit organization is governed by a Board of Directors.
Board of Directors

While earning his B.S. in Psychology from Ohio State University (Phi Beta Kappa, 2001), he co-founded Students for Freethought at OSU, an organization focused on building community among humanist-minded students and engaging the broader university in dialogue about meaning, ethics, and critical thinking.
In 2000, August co-founded the Secular Student Alliance and served as its Executive Director from 2001 to 2018. During his tenure, he led the organization’s growth from a loose student initiative into a nationally recognized nonprofit with professional staff, formal governance, and a broad network of hundreds of campus chapters.
August has also served on the boards of Camp Quest, the Humanist Community of Central Ohio, and the Secular Coalition for America. Since 2004, he has been a humanist celebrant, officiating weddings, funerals, and baby naming ceremonies.
He currently lives and works in Columbus, Ohio, where he is a realtor and innkeeper, and remains committed to applying science-based and human-centered solutions to strengthen communities and improve human life now.
Staff
The Evolution Institute operates with both operational staff and project-based individuals working around the globe.

Operations last Fall. One of his primary
responsibilities includes liaison between
an EI Board committee comprised of
Michelle Shimberg, Gin Lieberman, and
Darlene DeMarie and the Directors of the
two early learning centers: Frankie Jones
at East Tampa Academy and Cathy Fisher
at East Pasco Academy. The aim is to
assess what works best and share those
best practices between the sister schools.
Bruce was instrumental in the successful
2020 opening of East Pasco Academy –
overseeing everything from preparing the
building and play area to Cathy’s and
families’ recruitment – all during the outbreak of the pandemic.
